Garage Doors
We use steel I-beams for supporting the load over large openings such as 2-car garage doors, with C-channel for side column support. The usual requirement is a 5" wide x 8" tall x 21 pound per foot I-beam with a 3/16" x 11" plate welded to the bottom. The beam will have vertical #4 rebar dowels welded to it for each grout channel. The blocks are cut to fit over the I-beam and to sit on the 3/16" plate, as shown in the detail below.
The C-channel side columns also have rebar dowels welded to them; they are 15" long and extend into the horizontal channels. We usually mount these columns on 1/2" plate which is bolted to the footing, and once the pieces are plumbed and squared, we weld the I-beam to the C-Channel at the upper corners.
